The Biotech KISAN hub is DBT sponsored project to furthering the advancement of learning and research in agriculture and other allied sciences, with particular emphasis on temperate and cold arid agriculture as one of its major goals. Dissemination of such sciences and technologies to the rural farming community of the State through extension education services is one of the main activities of the hub. The Biotech KISAN Hub has rejuvenated 40 orchards till date under rejuvenation of apple orchards. A very innovative methodology has been used to transform the old, senile and the young and nonproductive orchards into more productive orchards. The rejuvenation of orchards with new and exotic varieties holds a great promise for reformation of horticulture sector, thereby making it more competitive in world market. The new high-density planation system of apple is taken up by farmers and is being promoted by the Biotech KISAN hub vigorously. However, there is a need to address the concerns of farmers where super high-density plantation is not possible and forms the 90 percent of the total area under apple in Jammu, Kashmir and Kargil and Leh districts of two union territories.
